Big River

To The People of Cajun Country

The water’s of the river’s rising

Lord don’t let Gumbo land float away

People from New Orleans down to Holly Beach Bay

They’ve got no place left to stay

When the water comes out of the Basin

There ain’t nothin’ waterproof

Standin’ on the levee with the river ragin’

They’ve got nothin’ left to lose

Big river, big rivers on the rise

Big river is gonna overflow

Big river is gonna wash us to the sea.

Back in 1969 six feet of water on the banjo line

Now the Government’s tryin’ to tell us

Said the new levee’s gonna hold this time

Big river, big river’s  on the rise

Big river is gonna overflow

Big river is gonna wash us to the sea.

I’ve seen the water under the levee

Just boiling out of a crawfish hole

And before the sun was settin’

Four feet of water at , my back door

Big river, big rivers on the rise

Big river is gonna overflow

Big river, oh the mighty Mississippi’s gonna rise

The mighty Mississippi is gonna overflow

And wash us to the sea.
